No overall summary is available for this report.

6.1·Weakness

The reasoning here is unclear and the Porter’s Five Forces analysis is only partially applied. The student should explicitly state how the digital strategy reduces the threat from substitutes and why the comparison with Lloyds is valid for the force being discussed.

Criteria A: Focus and Method

4/6

Criteria StrandsPro

A.1Topic communication and explanation

Good

A.2Research question formulation and focus

Moderate

A.3Research methodology

Moderate

Criteria Feedback

You state a clear research question that identifies the company, strategic issue, and intended outcome.
You include relevant sector and company context that helps the reader understand the investigation.
You make some attempt to signal a method and connect it to the inquiry.

Your question is too broad and combines several different issues, which weakens focus.
The method is described, but not explained in a way that shows exactly how evidence is selected and used.
The scope shifts between HSBC globally, HSBC UK, and the wider banking market, which reduces precision.

1.1·Weakness

Page 1• Click to view

The question is too broad because it asks about efficiency, effectiveness, competitive advantage, customer experience, the whole banking industry, and a long time frame all at once. The student should narrow the scope to one country, one comparator, or one main outcome so the discussion can be answered more precisely.

1.2·Strength

Page 1• Click to view

The research question is clearly stated and recognises the main strategic variables the essay will explore. This gives the investigation direction and shows the student has an identifiable Business Management focus rather than a general topic.

1.3·Weakness

Page 3• Click to view

The proposed survey is mentioned here, but the essay never clearly shows that such primary data were actually collected or how they affected the argument. The student should either integrate real survey evidence consistently or remove the claim that the investigation uses it.

1.4·Weakness

Page 3• Click to view

The methodology is named, but not yet explained in a way that shows how the sources will actually be used. The student should specify how the qualitative and quantitative evidence will be selected, compared, and weighed so the method becomes more than a list of source types.

1.5·Strength

Page 3• Click to view

The introduction shows a clear line of inquiry and signals an intended method, which helps the reader understand how the essay will proceed. The student is already linking the topic to the research focus rather than leaving it as background description.

1.6·Suggestion

Page 4• Click to view

Consider defining what counts as 'digitization' at the start of the analysis. A short operational definition would help the student distinguish between general IT change, mobile banking, automation, and full digital transformation.

1.7·Weakness

Page 4• Click to view

The quantitative method is only partially defined because the essay does not explain which KPIs are compared, over what years, or how the comparator bank is chosen. The student should make the method replicable by naming the exact indicators and the basis for comparison.

1.8·Weakness

Page 6• Click to view

This framework is introduced as necessary, but the essay does not show why STEEPLE is the best tool for this investigation or how it directly answers the research question. The student should justify the framework choice in terms of the question, not just in general business terms.

Criteria B: Knowledge and Understanding

4/6

Criteria StrandsPro

B.1Application of source material

Moderate

B.2Subject knowledge

Moderate

B.3Use of terminology and concepts

Moderate

Criteria Feedback

You use a relevant range of business terminology such as cost-to-income ratio, CRM, balanced scorecard, and sustainability.
You bring in source material throughout rather than relying on unsupported description.
You show awareness of several linked business issues, including efficiency, customer experience, automation, and risk.

Some concepts are applied imprecisely or too generally for the argument to be fully convincing.
Several numerical claims are not clearly reconciled or interpreted carefully enough.
At times, evidence about HSBC, HSBC UK, and the wider banking sector is blended together without enough distinction.

2.1·Strength

Page 5• Click to view

This is a strong attempt to connect a specific digital tool to a business outcome. The student is not only naming AI, but also explaining its intended effect on service quality and loyalty, which is the right kind of source application for this criterion.

2.2·Weakness

Page 5• Click to view

The definition of blockchain is oversimplified and the application to HSBC is asserted rather than evidenced. The student should explain exactly which HSBC operations are affected and support the claim with a source that shows implementation, not just interest in the technology.

2.3·Weakness

Page 6• Click to view

This sentence is broad and generic, so it does not yet demonstrate clear understanding of how each tool works in HSBC’s context. The student should separate the technologies and explain the distinct business contribution of each one.

2.4·Strength

Page 8• Click to view

The student uses CRM accurately here and ties it to a business objective, rather than mentioning the term in isolation. This helps show conceptual understanding and keeps the analysis connected to customer experience.

2.5·Weakness

Page 13• Click to view

This claim is very broad and is not directly supported by the evidence presented in the paragraph. The student should show which markets or operational constraints are responsible, rather than using a general explanation that could apply to any large multinational bank.

2.6·Weakness

Page 13• Click to view

This interpretation goes beyond what the ratio alone can prove. A cost-to-income ratio shows efficiency relative to income, but it does not by itself prove that finances were 'wrongly channeled.' The student should interpret the figure more carefully and consider other reasons for the ratio.

2.7·Weakness

Page 17• Click to view

This figure conflicts with the 62.8% cost-to-income ratio discussed earlier, and the essay does not explain whether the two measures are different or derived from different datasets. The student should clarify the metric or the reader cannot trust the comparison.

2.8·Suggestion

Page 18• Click to view

Consider adding one sentence that explains how sustainability links back to the main research question. This would help the section feel integrated rather than like an additional theme.

Criteria C: Critical Thinking

8/12

Criteria StrandsPro

C.1Research quality

Poor

C.2Analysis depth

Poor

C.3Discussion and evaluation

Poor

Criteria Feedback

You make a genuine attempt to evaluate the impact of digitization rather than presenting it as wholly positive.
You compare HSBC with Lloyds using performance indicators, which gives the discussion a comparative dimension.
You acknowledge counterarguments such as cybersecurity, exclusion of some customers, and job displacement.

The argument often relies on correlation rather than showing clear causation.
Some conclusions are stronger than the evidence allows, especially where figures are used without enough interpretation.
The evaluation is not always consistent, and some claims later in the essay do not fully reconcile with earlier evidence.

3.1·Strength

Page 12• Click to view

The student introduces a concrete evaluative point rather than only praising digitization. This is useful because it signals an attempt to balance benefits against costs, which is essential for higher-level critical thinking.

3.2·Weakness

Page 12• Click to view

The causal link is overstated because the essay moves from cost savings to improved efficiency without showing that digitization was the sole or main cause. The student should separate correlation from causation and consider other influences such as restructuring, scale, or post-pandemic demand changes.

3.3·Weakness

Page 13• Click to view

This conclusion is not sufficiently reasoned. The student should show how the evidence supports the claim and also consider alternative explanations before making a judgment about financial misallocation.

3.4·Weakness

Page 14• Click to view

The phrase 'at least partly due to this factor' is too vague to function as analysis. The student should explain exactly which feature of digitization affects satisfaction and support that claim with evidence rather than inference.

3.5·Question

Page 15• Click to view

If Lloyds is stronger on the selected UK measures, why does the conclusion later describe HSBC as maintaining a competitive edge? The student should reconcile those competing findings so the overall argument is consistent.

3.6·Weakness

Page 16• Click to view

The balanced scorecard is introduced as an evaluative tool, but the table that follows is mostly descriptive and contains unsupported targets. The student should use the scorecard to assess performance against evidence, not simply list metrics.

3.7·Weakness

Page 17• Click to view

Placeholder values weaken the analysis because the scorecard cannot evaluate performance without completed evidence. The student should replace every 'TBD' with a supported metric or remove the row if the data cannot be justified.

Criteria D: Presentation

4/4

Criteria StrandsPro

D.1Structure appropriateness

Good

D.2Layout and formatting

Good

Criteria Feedback

You provide a clear overall structure with title, contents, body sections, conclusion, and references.
Your pages are numbered and the document is easy to navigate.
You use tables and visuals to organize information and support comparison.

Some visuals are not fully integrated into the surrounding discussion.
The works-cited section has inconsistencies and duplication.
Some tables and sections are incomplete or visually awkward, which weakens polish.

4.1·Strength

Page 1• Click to view

The title is stated immediately at the start, which gives the document a professional opening and clearly signals the type of coursework being submitted.

4.2·Strength

Page 2• Click to view

The report has a clear table of contents, which helps the reader navigate the investigation and shows an organised structure. This supports readability and makes the essay easier to follow.

4.3·Strength

Page 2• Click to view

The document includes a main table, which helps organise information rather than leaving all evidence in continuous prose. This is especially useful in a business essay where comparison data need to be easy to scan.

4.4·Weakness

Page 11• Click to view

This visual is not clearly integrated into the argument because the source, date, and market definition are not made explicit in the nearby discussion. The student should label and interpret the figure more directly so the reader understands why it matters.

4.5·Weakness

Page 11• Click to view

The position map is presented as evidence, but the axes and positioning logic are not explained in the surrounding text. The student should state what the map measures and what conclusion the reader is meant to draw from it.

4.6·Weakness

Page 17• Click to view

The balanced scorecard table is incomplete and carries through onto the next page without being fully developed in the analysis. The student should either finish the table cleanly with supported entries or simplify it so it directly contributes to the argument.

4.7·Strength

Page 24• Click to view

The presence of a works-cited section shows that the student has attempted to document sources systematically, which is an important presentation feature for an extended essay.

4.8·Weakness

Page 24• Click to view

The works-cited list contains inconsistent formatting and appears to merge entries together in places. The student should standardise citation style, separate each source clearly, and remove duplicates so the reference list is easier to verify.
