General feedback

13/20

No overall summary is available for this report.

5.1·Weakness

Page 6• Click to view

The student mentions Mrs. Greenwood’s role, but the discussion remains too general to show sustained understanding of this relationship. To improve, the essay should analyse how this maternal pressure is expressed through specific dialogue or behaviour, and how it complicates rather than simply confirms Esther’s breakdown.

5.2·Question

Page 6• Click to view

How directly does this comparison illuminate Esther’s character, rather than shifting attention away from Plath’s novel? The student could test whether the parallel adds fresh insight into Esther’s struggle for identity or simply restates the essay’s existing point about oppression.

Criteria A: Knowledge, Understanding and Interpretation

3/5

Criteria StrandsPro

A.1Knowledge and understanding of the work/text

Good

A.2Use of references and textual support

Good

Criteria Feedback

The student shows a clear understanding of Esther’s conflict and the novel’s 1950s social context.
The student uses a relevant range of textual references from across the novel to support their ideas.
The student often connects Esther’s experiences to wider ideas about restriction, identity, and gender expectations.

Some interpretations stay broad and repeat the same general ideas rather than developing them in a more nuanced way.
A few contextual or biographical points are mentioned without being fully connected to the novel’s argument.
Some evidence is used to confirm a point already made rather than being explored in a more specific or insightful way.

1.1·Strength

Page 2• Click to view

The student selects a quotation that immediately fits the line of inquiry about gendered restriction. By opening with a statement from the novel itself, the essay establishes a clear conceptual focus on women’s roles and gives the argument a strong textual foundation from the start.

1.2·Weakness

Page 2• Click to view

The student introduces biographical context, but this claim is not yet used to deepen the interpretation of Esther as a character in the novel. To strengthen knowledge and understanding, the essay should explain why the autobiographical link matters for the argument about Esther’s conflict, rather than mentioning it as background.

1.3·Strength

Page 3• Click to view

This is a strong interpretation because it connects the image to Esther’s psychological state and the wider social system at the same time. The student shows how the reference to the trolley-bus moves beyond plot summary and helps explain the novel’s critique of limited female agency.

1.4·Suggestion

Page 4• Click to view

The student should consider adding one more layer of specificity here by linking the idea of “starving” to the particular cost of each possible path Esther sees. That would make the interpretation more nuanced and show a stronger grasp of how Plath structures the fig-tree moment.

1.5·Strength

Page 5• Click to view

This is a convincing piece of interpretation because it identifies the gender double standard behind Buddy’s behaviour and explains its significance for Esther’s disillusionment. The student shows awareness that the scene is not just about plot, but about the unequal moral code the novel exposes.

Criteria B: Analysis and Evaluation

3/5

Criteria StrandsPro

B.1Analysis of textual features and author's choices

Good

Criteria Feedback

The student identifies several important authorial choices, including figurative language, first-person narration, and violent imagery.
The student usually connects literary techniques to Esther’s emotional state and sense of powerlessness.
The student shows awareness that Plath’s methods shape the reader’s understanding of control, tension, and alienation.

The student's analysis sometimes becomes repetitive, returning to the same general ideas without adding new insight.
Some terminology is imprecise, which weakens the sharpness of the commentary.
At times the student moves too quickly from technique to theme without fully exploring how the writing creates its effect.

2.1·Weakness

Page 3• Click to view

The terminology here is not precise. “Pathetic fallacy” usually refers to weather or the natural world reflecting emotion, so applying it to New York weakens the analysis. The student should either choose a more accurate term or explain clearly how the city itself is being personified as oppressive.

2.2·Question

Page 3• Click to view

What does the fig-tree also suggest about choice itself, beyond the pressure to choose? Considering the image as a structure of branching possibilities may open a more subtle evaluation of why Esther experiences paralysis.

2.3·Strength

Page 3• Click to view

The student does well to unpack the simile as a way of showing Esther’s loss of control. This is effective analysis because it links a specific stylistic choice to the broader idea of constrained agency, which keeps the commentary tied to Plath’s craft rather than only to theme.

2.4·Suggestion

Page 4• Click to view

The student should reduce the move into generic reader response and instead stay focused on Plath’s methods. A sharper comment would explain how the fig-tree imagery, diction, or narrative perspective creates that sympathy, which would make the evaluation more analytical.

2.5·Strength

Page 4• Click to view

This analysis is effective because it moves from quotation to interpretation in a focused way. The student shows how the printed page functions as both refuge and escape, which adds complexity to Esther’s relationship with literature.

2.6·Weakness

Page 5• Click to view

The analysis becomes repetitive here, restating the same idea of powerlessness without adding new insight into Plath’s choices. The student should push further by explaining how the violent imagery changes the reader’s understanding of Esther’s vulnerability or how it fits the novel’s wider pattern of coercion.

2.7·Strength

Page 5• Click to view

This is a strong analytical point because it explains the effect of the command rather than merely identifying it. The student connects tone, power, and objectification in a way that shows clear awareness of how Plath builds menace in the scene.

Criteria C: Focus, Organization and Development

4/5

Criteria StrandsPro

C.1Organization and development of ideas

Good

C.2Integration of supporting examples

Excellent

Criteria Feedback

The student's essay has a clear overall direction and stays focused on Esther’s struggle with identity and restriction.
The student's paragraphs are logically sequenced and usually lead the reader through a coherent argument.
The student's quotations are mostly integrated smoothly into the discussion and supported with commentary.

Some sections are more developed than others, so the argument is not equally balanced throughout.
The conclusion repeats earlier ideas rather than pushing the line of inquiry into a more developed final insight.
A few examples are not explored as fully as they could be, which limits the depth of development.

3.1·Strength

Page 2• Click to view

The introduction sets out a clear line of inquiry and previews the essay’s main areas of discussion, which helps the reader follow the argument. This forward structure is effective because each later paragraph can be linked back to one of these stated conflicts.

3.2·Weakness

Page 4• Click to view

This framing is promising, but it is not followed through with enough development in the paragraph. The student should make sure each example contributes a distinct part of the argument, rather than using both characters mainly to support the same broad point about male oppression.

3.3·Strength

Page 4• Click to view

This topic sentence helps the essay stay organised by signalling a new subsection of the argument. It works well because it clearly connects relationships to the larger idea of identity crisis, so the paragraph remains aligned with the overall line of inquiry.

3.4·Question

Page 4• Click to view

How does this idea of literature as both refuge and alienation change the essay’s argument about Esther’s identity search? Thinking about that tension could help the student develop a more layered line of inquiry instead of treating books only as comfort.

3.5·Weakness

Page 6• Click to view

The conclusion repeats the essay’s central claim without developing it further, so the line of inquiry feels only partially refined by the end. The student should use the conclusion to show what the argument reveals about Esther’s transformation, rather than restating earlier points in different wording.

3.6·Weakness

Page 6• Click to view

The final sentence is too broad and syntactically awkward, so it does not fully develop the paragraph’s evidence. The student should end with a more precise claim that synthesises Mrs. Greenwood’s role and explains how this relationship contributes to Esther’s deterioration.

3.7·Suggestion

Page 6• Click to view

The student should consider removing or shortening this external comparison unless it is tightly tied back to a specific moment in the novel. Keeping the conclusion focused on Plath’s text would improve cohesion and preserve the essay’s literary line of inquiry.

Criteria D: Language

3/5

Criteria StrandsPro

D.1Language clarity and accuracy

Good

D.2Register and style appropriateness

Good

Criteria Feedback

The student's writing is generally clear and communicates their ideas effectively.
The student uses an appropriate academic register for literary analysis.
The student includes relevant subject vocabulary such as symbolism, characterisation, and first-person perspective.

There are noticeable errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation that sometimes reduce precision.
Some phrasing is overly general or awkward, which weakens the clarity of expression.
At times the style becomes less precise than it should be for a literary essay.

4.1·Strength

Page 2• Click to view

The student’s academic vocabulary is generally controlled and appropriate for HL literary analysis. Terms such as “stream-of-consciousness narrative” and “oppressive standards of femininity” show a strong attempt to use subject-specific language accurately and maintain a formal register.

4.2·Suggestion

Page 2• Click to view

The student could make this sentence even more precise by trimming general phrasing such as “many face” and focusing more directly on the novel. Sharper expression would give the introduction a more authoritative and analytical tone.

4.3·Weakness

Page 4• Click to view

This phrasing is too general and slightly conversational for a literary essay. The student should replace broad reader-response language with more specific analytical wording that reflects Plath’s textual choices and keeps the register consistently academic.

4.4·Strength

Page 4• Click to view

The register is mostly effective here because the language remains formal and conceptually focused. The student sustains an appropriate literary tone by using precise abstract nouns such as “longing,” “potential,” and “identity crisis.”

4.5·Weakness

Page 5• Click to view

There are several accuracy issues here, including spelling and phrasing that reduce precision. The student should proofread for errors such as “powerlessnes” and revise sentences that become wordy, because cleaner expression would make the analysis more convincing.

4.6·Strength

Page 6• Click to view

The conclusion maintains a confident academic register and closes the essay with a clear, formal cadence. This works well because it gives the argument a controlled ending and reinforces the essay’s central conceptual concerns.
