How difficult is it to get a 7 in IB English A Literature?

A 7 is demanding because it requires consistently strong performance across several different forms of assessment. Students must analyse unseen writing, compare studied works, communicate orally, and, at HL, complete an extended literary essay. Excellent plot knowledge alone is insufficient because the criteria reward interpretation, analysis, evaluation, organization, and language. The challenge becomes manageable when these skills are practised separately before being combined in timed responses. Regular criterion-based feedback is more useful than relying on a single mock-examination result.

What mark do I need for a 7 in IB English A Literature?

There is no permanent percentage that guarantees a 7 in IB English A Literature. The IB sets grade boundaries for each assessment session after reviewing candidate performance, statistical evidence, grade descriptors, and the difficulty of the assessment. Your weighted component marks are combined and then converted into a subject grade from 1 to 7. Boundaries from previous sessions may provide context, but they should not be treated as guaranteed targets. Aim to demonstrate the qualities in the official grade 7 descriptor across every criterion.

How many quotations should I memorize for IB English Paper 2?

The IB does not prescribe a required number of quotations for Paper 2. Build a selective bank of short, versatile quotations and accurately remembered moments for each likely work instead of trying to memorize entire passages. Choose evidence that supports several concepts and allows discussion of language, structure, characterization, or imagery. Exact wording is valuable, but a precise reference to an event or formal feature can also support analysis when used accurately. Your interpretation of the evidence matters more than the size of your quotation bank.

Should I memorize an essay for IB English Literature Paper 2?

Memorizing a complete Paper 2 essay is risky because the examination question may demand a different concept, emphasis, or comparison. A partially relevant prepared response usually loses marks for focus and interpretation. Instead, memorize flexible knowledge: important moments, short quotations, authorial choices, contextual insights, and connections between works. Practise adapting this material to questions about ideas such as power, identity, conflict, perspective, or transformation. This approach preserves preparation while allowing you to answer the precise wording of the examination task.

How often should I practise Paper 1 to reach a 7?

One focused Paper 1 task each week is a reasonable starting point during the course, although your schedule should reflect your current weaknesses and other subjects. Not every practice session needs to involve a complete timed essay. You can alternate among close annotation, thesis writing, paragraph development, essay planning, and full responses. Every attempt should be checked against the four assessment criteria and followed by a specific improvement target. As the examination approaches, complete several full papers under the exact time limit required for your level.

Can I get a 7 in English A Literature if English is not my first language?

Yes, because the course rewards literary understanding, analysis, organization, and effective communication rather than native-speaker status. You need accurate and appropriately varied language, but unnecessarily complex vocabulary is not required. Develop a working bank of analytical verbs and literary terminology, then practise using them in clear sentences. Reading model literary criticism can help you notice how strong writers connect evidence to interpretation without copying their ideas or wording. Frequent writing, targeted correction, and deliberate editing can produce substantial improvement over the two-year course.

How to Get a 7 in IB English A Literature

• 3 Aug 2026•12

Getting a 7 in IB English A Literature requires more than knowing the plots of your texts or memorizing literary devices. You must consistently interpret texts, analyse how authorial choices create meaning, organize convincing arguments, and support them with precise evidence. The most reliable strategy is to study the assessment criteria, build a detailed knowledge of your works, and practise applying analytical skills under timed conditions.

A 7 is not tied to one permanent percentage. The IB sets grade boundaries after each examination session by reviewing candidate work against grade descriptors, so boundaries can change. Your practical aim should therefore be to produce work that displays the qualities in the official grade 7 descriptor rather than chasing an unofficial mark prediction.

Understand what the course assesses

The current IB Language A: Literature subject brief identifies four broad assessment objectives: knowledge and interpretation, analysis and evaluation, communication, and effective language use. These recur across every component, although their precise application changes according to the task.

Component	SL weighting	HL weighting	Central task
Paper 1	35%	35%	Guided literary analysis of unseen passage or passages
Paper 2	35%	25%	Comparative essay on two studied works
Individual oral	30%	20%	Analysis of a global issue in two studied literary works
HL essay	Not applicable	20%	A 1,200-1,500 word essay on one studied work

In Paper 1, SL students write one analysis in 1 hour 15 minutes, while HL students write two in 2 hours 15 minutes. Paper 2 lasts 1 hour 45 minutes at both levels and asks students to answer one of four questions. The individual oral consists of a prepared 10-minute response followed by 5 minutes of teacher questions.

English A Literature students study nine works at SL and 13 at HL, selected across different literary forms, periods, and places. However, high achievement depends less on recalling every detail from every work than on knowing the works selected for each assessment in analytically useful depth.

Know what grade 7 analysis looks like

The official IB grade descriptors describe grade 7 work as showing excellent understanding of the relationship between form and content, detailed and independent analysis, effective structure, precise expression, contextual awareness, and relevant textual support.

The crucial phrase is the relationship between form and content. Identifying personification, fragmented syntax, or an unreliable narrator is not enough. You must explain how that choice shapes the reader’s interpretation of a character, conflict, setting, or idea.

A useful analytical sequence is:

Make an interpretive claim that answers the question.
Select a precise textual detail.
identify the authorial choice operating in that detail.
Explain how the choice produces meaning or an effect.
Connect the analysis back to the wider argument.

For example, replace “the writer uses short sentences to create tension” with a more developed claim: “The abrupt minor sentences interrupt the narrator’s previously reflective rhythm, reproducing the character’s panic and making rational control appear temporarily impossible.” The second version explains both the effect and its interpretive significance.

Build knowledge that can become an argument

Plot summaries are useful for basic recall, but they do not prepare you to answer unfamiliar questions. Create an analytical record for each important work covering:

central tensions and ideas
narrative or dramatic structure
voice, perspective, and characterization
recurring imagery, symbols, and motifs
significant beginnings, endings, and turning points
relevant historical, cultural, or literary contexts
short quotations and precisely remembered moments

Organize this material by concepts such as power, identity, memory, conflict, justice, transformation, or belonging. A concept-based system makes it easier to adapt your knowledge to Paper 2 questions instead of forcing a memorized essay onto the prompt.

Context should clarify interpretation, not replace analysis. Rather than inserting a paragraph of historical background, explain how a contextual pressure is embedded in a formal choice. For instance, you might analyse how restricted narration exposes the limits placed on a character’s social understanding.

Master Paper 1 close reading

Paper 1 tests whether you can transfer your literary skills to an unseen passage. Begin by establishing a defensible overall interpretation, then examine patterns, contrasts, developments, and structural shifts that support it. The guiding question offers a productive focus, but you may formulate your own focus if it leads to a coherent analysis.

During annotation, prioritize choices that contribute to a pattern:

shifts in tone, pace, tense, or perspective
contrasts between images, characters, or settings
patterns in syntax, sound, diction, or figurative language
structural features such as repetition, stanza development, stage directions, or narrative framing
ambiguity, irony, gaps, and contradictions

Do not organize an essay as a catalogue of devices. Group paragraphs around interpretive ideas, such as the speaker’s unstable authority or the transformation of an apparently safe setting. Within each paragraph, analyse several connected details.

Timed practice is essential, particularly for HL students who must complete two responses. Use the official English A Literature specimen papers alongside RevisionDojo’s Paper 1 Literature resources. After writing, assess the response for understanding, analysis, focus, organization, and language rather than judging it by length.

Make Paper 2 genuinely comparative

Paper 2 requires a comparative argument about two studied works, not two separate mini-essays. The official Paper 2 specimen confirms that students choose one of four general questions and write without copies of their works in the examination room.

Choose works that create productive similarities and differences. A strong pairing might explore the same concern through contrasting genres, narrative perspectives, social contexts, or endings. Prepare several pairings so that you retain flexibility when you see the questions.

Plan the essay point by point. Each body paragraph should compare how both writers treat one aspect of the question, moving between the works where appropriate. Comparative connectives such as “whereas,” “similarly,” and “by contrast” help, but genuine comparison comes from explaining the significance of the relationship.

Your thesis must answer the exact question and name the main comparative insight. Avoid predictions such as “This essay will compare power in both works.” Instead, argue something contestable, such as: “Although both writers portray authority as dependent on public obedience, one uses tragic inevitability while the other uses narrative fragmentation to show how that obedience can be disrupted.”

Use RevisionDojo’s Paper 2 Literature notes to practise applying different questions to your selected pairings. Evidence does not always require a perfectly memorized quotation, but references must be accurate, specific, and connected to authorial choices.

Prepare the individual oral and HL essay strategically

For the individual oral, select a global issue that is significant across borders, appears in everyday contexts, and is meaningfully present in both works. In Literature, the task concerns one work originally written in the language studied and one work studied in translation. Your analysis must move between the chosen extracts and the wider works rather than treating the extracts as isolated passages.

A strong oral balances both works and repeatedly connects form to the global issue. Rehearse from the permitted outline rather than memorizing a script, because natural command of the argument will also help during the teacher’s questions. RevisionDojo’s Individual Oral resources can support planning and rehearsal.

At HL, the essay is a formal 1,200-1,500 word exploration of a focused line of inquiry on one studied work. A successful inquiry combines an authorial choice with a meaningful idea and remains narrow enough for sustained analysis. The RevisionDojo HL essay guide is useful for testing whether a proposed inquiry can produce an argument rather than a descriptive survey.

Draft by criterion. Check that every paragraph develops the line of inquiry, uses precise textual support, and explains the significance of the writer’s decisions. Follow your school’s guidance on citations, formatting, authentication, and deadlines, as these administrative requirements are distinct from advice about writing quality.

Use a revision cycle based on feedback

Reading notes alone creates familiarity, not examinable skill. A stronger weekly cycle is:

Review one work, concept, or literary form.
Complete a Paper 1 annotation or Paper 2 plan.
Write one paragraph or timed response.
Mark it against the relevant criteria.
Rewrite the weakest section.
Record one recurring improvement target.

Targets should be specific, such as “explain the effect of structural choices” or “compare both works throughout each paragraph.” RevisionDojo’s IB English A Literature hub and Questionbank can provide structured practice. Jojo AI can help identify weaknesses in an argument, but feedback should support your own interpretation and must be used within your school’s academic integrity rules.

Avoid the mistakes that keep strong students below a 7

Common weaknesses include retelling the plot, naming techniques without evaluating them, using vague evidence, and writing a memorized response that only partly addresses the question. Other students lose focus because their thesis is too broad or each paragraph introduces an unrelated idea.

Do not assume sophisticated vocabulary automatically improves Criterion D. Clear syntax, accurate terminology, and controlled expression are more valuable than ornate wording. Finally, do not treat a practice score as permanent: use the criterion comments to decide exactly what to change in the next response.

Conclusion

To get a 7 in IB English A Literature, develop detailed textual knowledge, analyse the relationship between form and meaning, answer each task precisely, and practise under realistic conditions. Treat the criteria as a description of excellent literary thinking rather than a checklist to mention mechanically. RevisionDojo’s study notes, Questionbank, Paper 1 and Paper 2 resources, and Jojo AI can support a disciplined cycle of practice, feedback, and revision.
