How do I choose an IB CAS project that won’t ruin my revision schedule?

Start by assuming you have less time than you think. The best IB CAS project is one you can repeat weekly without complex coordination, because consistency beats intensity. Choose something with built-in evidence like drafts, session plans, attendance, or performance recordings, so documentation doesn’t become a second job. Make sure your project can run for at least a month and involves collaboration, since that is a core expectation for a CAS project. Then cap your CAS planning time to fixed windows, so it can’t expand into every evening. Finally, keep your reflection format short and structured, because reflection is what turns “doing” into valid CAS.

What’s the difference between an IB CAS experience and an IB CAS project?

An IB CAS experience can be a single event or an ongoing activity, as long as it clearly fits Creativity, Activity, or Service and includes reflection. An IB CAS project is larger: it must last at least a month and involve planning and execution with others. In practice, experiences are your steady rhythm, while the project is your one longer arc. Many students struggle because they treat every experience like a mini-project and over-document, or treat a project like a one-day event and under-plan. If you’re unsure, use What Counts as a CAS Project vs. a CAS Experience? as your decision guide. The goal is clarity for you and clarity for your coordinator.

Can I use school subjects or coursework as IB CAS?

In general, no: academic work done for assessment does not count as IB CAS. CAS is meant to be extracurricular and focused on personal growth, wellbeing, and community engagement, not graded subject requirements. The confusion is common, especially for creative subjects, where the activity feels like “Creativity” but is still assessed coursework. If you want to be safe, separate your CAS output from anything that contributes to a subject grade. You can still use subject-related skills in CAS (for example, teaching a skill or making a community resource) as long as it is not assessed work. When in doubt, ask your CAS coordinator early rather than trying to retroactively justify it.

IB CAS Project Ideas That Don’t Wreck Exam Prep

IB IB Core IB CAS

CAS can feel like the one part of the IB that refuses to stay in its lane.

You sit down to revise. You open your notes. And then your brain remembers you also promised someone you’d "draft a plan" for a charity event, record a reflection, and find a supervisor signature. Suddenly, your neat exam schedule looks like a paper boat in a storm.

The secret is not to do "more" CAS. It’s to choose CAS experiences and a CAS project that are naturally sustainable during IB exam prep. That means simple logistics, real learning, and reflections you can write while your memory is still warm.

An IB student spilling chaotic CAS ideas

A quick IB CAS checklist (so your ideas actually work)

Before you commit, run every idea through this filter. It will save you weeks.

Does it fit Creativity, Activity, or Service clearly? (Better if it overlaps strands.)
Can you do it consistently for 4+ weeks? A CAS project needs at least a month of planning and execution.
Does it create real evidence? Photos, agendas, drafts, attendance sheets, feedback.
Can you describe growth? Skills, challenges, decisions, collaboration.
Will it survive exam season? If it requires seven meetings a week, it won’t.

If you’re unsure what qualifies, read What Is CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service)? and double-check the minimum requirements for CAS in the IBDP.

CAS project vs CAS experience (choose the right size)

Many IB students lose time by building a project when they only needed an experience, or by logging experiences that don’t add up to a coherent project.

A CAS experience can be one-off or ongoing, but it still needs reflection and evidence. A CAS project is longer-term, collaborative, and lasts at least one month.

If you want a clean distinction (and less coordinator back-and-forth), use this guide: What Counts as a CAS Project vs. a CAS Experience?.

Creativity Activity Service arguing over credit

Creativity CAS ideas (high impact, low chaos)

These creativity options work well for IB students because they create natural artifacts: drafts, designs, recordings, scripts.

Mini-documentary series: “One local issue, five short episodes”

Pick a topic you genuinely care about (food waste, transport access, local history). Create 3-5 short episodes, each under three minutes.

Strands: Creativity, Service (often)
Why it works for IB: Clear planning, measurable skills growth (editing, interviewing), easy evidence.

Student revision zine or newsletter (not a full newspaper)

A full newspaper dies under deadlines. A small monthly zine survives.

Strands: Creativity, Service
Tip: Feature student stories about study habits, wellbeing, and community efforts. Keep it tight.

“Teach one creative skill” workshop

Run a beginner workshop: photography basics, Canva design, creative writing prompts, or simple music composition.

Strands: Creativity, Service
Evidence: Slides, attendance list, feedback forms, your lesson plan.

School exhibition with a theme: “small work, real meaning”

Instead of a huge gallery event, curate a themed exhibit in a hallway, library corner, or online gallery.

Strands: Creativity, Service
Ethical angle: inclusivity, representation, accessibility.

Activity CAS ideas (that don’t steal revision time)

Activity is where IB students often overcommit, then stop, then panic-log. Choose something repeatable.

Charity run or walk with a simple structure

One event. One route. One cause. One post-event reflection.

Strands: Activity, Service
If you’re wondering what counts, see Can Jogging Be Considered a CAS Experience?.

“Micro-team” sports club

A full league is a logistical monster. A micro-team is sustainable: 8-12 people, weekly practice, occasional friendly games.

Strands: Activity, Service
Learning outcomes: collaboration, perseverance, leadership.

Outdoor sessions with an environmental purpose

Monthly hike + short trail cleanup. Or a beginner-friendly climbing day with safety planning.

Strands: Activity, Service
Evidence: route plan, safety checklist, photos, reflections.

Dance or movement challenge (with coaching)

Host a short dance marathon fundraiser, or run weekly beginner sessions (stretching, basic choreography, mobility).

Strands: Activity, Service
Why it works: clear progress markers, easy collaboration.

Charity run but the dog wants CAS credit

Service CAS ideas (real service, not performative service)

Service is strongest when it’s consistent and specific, not when it’s a one-time “big gesture.”

Tutoring program with a narrow promise

Don’t offer to tutor “everything.” Offer one subject, one year group, one weekly slot.

Strands: Service, Creativity
Evidence: lesson outlines, attendance, anonymized improvement feedback.

Elderly outreach with a repeatable activity

Reading sessions, tech help, board games, short walks. The key is routine.

Strands: Service, Activity
Ethical angle: privacy, dignity, consent for photos.

Environmental awareness campaign (small but consistent)

A weekly “one change” campaign: recycling clarity posters, waste audits, a social media series, or lunchroom sorting support.

Strands: Service, Creativity
Evidence: posts, designs, data (even simple counts).

Fundraising with transparency

Bake sales are fine if you track where the money goes and reflect on impact.

Strands: Service, Creativity
Tip: Show budgeting, permissions, and outcomes.

The IB-friendly way to document CAS without burning out

CAS fails most often on documentation, not on effort.

If you’re drowning in admin during IB revision season, steal a system from people who stay calm: fixed windows and small reflections. This pairs well with Balancing CAS With Real Life (Without Burning Out).

A practical approach:

Do the experience (keep it short and real)
Capture evidence immediately (one photo, one artifact, one note)
Write a short reflection same day (six sentences is enough if it’s honest)

Schools verify CAS through your coordinator and portfolio processes, so don’t guess about what they need. Use: How Does CAS Get Verified in the IB System?.

How RevisionDojo helps you keep IB exam momentum while doing CAS

Here’s the quiet truth: CAS becomes stressful when it steals cognitive energy from studying.

RevisionDojo is designed to protect your exam prep loop while your CAS plan runs in the background:

Use the RevisionDojo for IB hub to keep your subjects organized.
Lock in weak content fast with Study Notes, then prove it with the Questionbank.
Turn recurring mistakes into Flashcards so your CAS weeks don’t erase your progress.
Use AI Chat as an “unstuck button” when you can’t afford a 40-minute spiral.
Build stamina using Mock Exams and Predicted Papers (timed realism without guesswork).
Use Grading tools and the Coursework Library when coursework pressure spikes.
If you need a human to simplify the knot quickly, Tutors can save weeks.

If you want a disciplined routine, pair CAS with a proven exam system like How 45-Point IB Students Prepare for Exams and keep your practice consistent.

A calm ending: let CAS support your IB, not sabotage it

You don’t need the most impressive CAS story in your cohort. You need a sustainable one.

Pick one IB-friendly CAS project you can run for a month, stack it with smaller CAS experiences you can repeat, and keep reflections short but truthful. Then protect your revision loop with RevisionDojo: Study Notes for clarity, Questionbank for marks, Flashcards for retention, AI Chat for speed, and Mock Exams and Predicted Papers for pressure training.
